Turas Appraisal is the application for recording the appraisal information of Health and Care staff across Scotland.
Detailed in the tabs below you will find Turas Appraisal information in place within your Board.
Turas Appraisal Reporting for Line Managers & Reviewers
A new development within Turas Appraisal is now available for Line Managers and Reviewers.
A Team Progress Dashboard has been created for Line Managers and Reviewers that details how many of the staff you line manage/review on Turas Appraisal have had a completed Appraisal within the last 12 months. You will be able to track progress throughout the year, including when objectives and PDP's have been singed off and if a current appraisal has been started. To view this information an additional button now appears within your ‘My Team’ tile on your Turas Appraisal homepage.
Line Manager and Reviewer guidance can be found in the tabs below the Board links on this page.

Turas Appraisal is a digital platform developed by NHS Education for Scotland (NES) and replaces the previous online recording system known as eKSF. The system is still aligned to the NHS knowledge and skills framework and enables all agenda for change and executive level staff to capture and record their personal development, objectives and reviews.
All staff have access to a personal Turas Appraisal account and should use this tool to capture appraisals.
We have developed a range of FAQ's to assist with any queries you may have. If you have searched the list and can't find an answer to your query please contact us using the Contact Us form.

Help and support
Any queries that you have about Turas Appraisal must be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org which is the mailbox for the Administrators within NES.
Turas Appraisal is hosted by NES and provided for use by all 22 Boards which includes NES. Should your query require additional technical support then the NES Administrator will raise it with the Digital team.
Please do not contact Digital direct as your query will not be actioned.
How can I access my Turas Appraisal account when I move from another Board?
All users of Turas Appraisal have one account for the application that contains all your current and terminated employments. When your employment is terminated at your previous Board it will update through to Appraisal. At this point the email address attached to your account will still be the same as it was from your previous Board and you can continue to access it using your existing details.
The details for your new employment will also update on to your existing account too and it will appear on your Appraisal homepage. Your previous employment will appear under the My History option on your homepage.
You may want your account to be updated to show your NES email address and you can request this by emailing email@example.com. Once your email address has been updated on your account you will be sent a confirmation email. In the meantime, while you await confirmation you can still log into your Appraisal account.
You can download our Turas Appraisal guide.
To ensure consistency of recording within the system, four common scenarios have been developed. Please read through them and see which scenario applies to you.

The Turas Appraisal system has been in development in order to replace eKSF for the recording of all development reviews. The system has been developed in response to staff feedback to provide a streamlined and simpler user interface. On 2 April 2018 all Agenda for Change staff in NHS Scotland will receive their Turas Appraisal username and password by e-mail. This will be your chance to log on to the system, get familiar with the layout and create a password of your choice. The system has a simple design and has in-built guidance on each section (PDPs, objectives, etc) to explains its function, therefore there is no need for additional training to use Turas.
You do not need to take immediate action, however you should discuss with your manager how you will begin to record the outcome of your next scheduled development review meeting on the system. The next steps for the Turas Appraisal implementation will include the transfer of legacy information from e-KSF (PDP, Objectives & Personal Development Review) to make it available for you to view and the development of an app to support ease of access. Thereafter the functionality of the system will be developed based on priorities agreed by all Boards. As additional information is received will be posted on the pages. In the meantime if you have any questions, we have created a dedicated email address for all Turas enquiries (firstname.lastname@example.org).
New to Turas? If you did not receive an email from Turas with your login details, please send a request for this to the above email address.

- I have not received a Turas Appraisal login
Your Turas Appraisal login details will be sent out from NHS NES as part of the joiners process. If you do not receive account details please let us know using the Contact Us form
N.B. Please do not create your own Turas account. You are not creating an Appraisal account, only a Turas Dashboard account. You will not be able to log into Appraisal with this.
- How do I reset my Turas Appraisal password?
You can do this yourself using the ‘Can’t access your account’ link on the home sign in screen. You will then be able to update your password - make sure you follow the guidance for passwords, e.g., 8 to 16 characters combining upper case and lowercase. Your password MUST contain at least one number and one special character/symbol.
If you use the ‘Can’t Access Your Account’ link you will need to enter a verification code that is sent to you when you start the reset process. This code is sent from Microsoft, which is the platform that Turas sits on, and is only valid for 5 minutes from when it is received. If you do not activate with the code during the 5 minutes the code will not work.
If you have issues with the verification code then we recommend that you use the "Contact Us" form and we will email a password to you. You will still have to reset your password but it does not involve using a verification code.
- My personal information is not correct on Turas Appraisal
If your name or email address has changed, please complete the Contact Us form.
- I have a Turas Appraisal issue - who do I ask for help?
Your initial contact should be via the Contact Us form on HR Connect.
Please do not use the Help function within the Turas Dashboard. Calls raised within the Turas Appraisal dashboard will be forwarded onto NSS HR by NHS NES, who own and manage the system. It will only prolong your request for help.
- What if I sign off my appraisal in error on Turas Appraisal?
If you select ‘Confirm & Agree’ your appraisal will be locked meaning you will no longer be able to update it. If only one of you, the Reviewee or Reviewer, has selected confirm and agree then this can be reversed by your local HR team. If both have confirmed and agreed then a request will have to be made to NES to do this and may take longer to unlock. In either event you should raise a support request via our Contact Us Form here on HR Connect, stating if one or both have confirmed and agreed.
DO NOT SELECT 'CONFIRM & AGREE UNTIL THE END OF THE APPRAISAL PERIOD. DO NOT CLICK ON THIS AT THE MID YEAR REVIEW STAGE.
- What if my Reviewees are incorrect?
If any of the staff listed are incorrect or if anyone is missing, please use the Contact Us Form to let HR know who is missing or who needs removed. Please provide as much information as possible, bearing in mind there may be multiple people within the organisation with the same name.
- Will my post outline transfer to Turas Appraisal?
Yes all post outlines assigned in eKSF will transfer to Turas Appraisal. If you did not have an assigned post outline in eKSF then your line manager can add this for you. When updating Post Outlines, Line Managers will be able to view a list of all approved post outlines for NSS. In addition, when updating the Reviewer details, Line Managers will be able to select from the drop down list of staff who have Reviewer responsibilities across their Board. You will find a guide in Tools and Templates on the Learning & Development pages
- Who inputs the information – line manager or employee?

- Which web browser better supports the Turas Appraisal system?
In NSS it is recommended by IT to use IE 11 and Firefox.

DO NOT Select ‘Confirm & Agree’ until the end of the appraisal period
- When is the end of year review due?
The year end for the review process runs between February and March, ready to start the new appraisal year in April.

Line Managers are able to change/assign new Reviewers to their staff by following the guidance under tools and templates tab.
- What if my Post Outline is incorrect?
Line Managers can assign post outlines to their staff from the generic library available in Turas Appraisal. The same functionality will also allow Line Managers to assign a reviewer to their member of staff.
- What if my manager is incorrect?
Line managers are responsible for ensuring that staff have the correct managers. Please use the Contact Us form and HR Services will ensure that the correct line manager is assigned to the staff member .
- What do I do if I get an unexpected error in Turas Appraisal
If you receive a message advising of an Unexpected Error this can be caused by a drop in the bandwidth available which often leads to a "timeout" of the action you were attempting to carry out. Unfortunately this is out with our control and the action to take is to log out and try again later.
- Is the reviewer different from the line manager?
The reviewer and the line manager can be the same or different.
- Is a mid-year review process incorporated into the system?
No, this has not been incorporated within the system. Line managers should ensure they have mid-year review conversations with staff. Any comments can be added into Turas with a date under the Objectives tabs.
DO NOT CLICK ON 'AGREE & CONFIRM' AT THIS STAGE.
- How can I obtain a KSF Post Outline Dimension Levels, both Foundation and Full, plus the level detail associated with each dimension?
Within Turas Appraisal the library holds the post outlines available for NSS which are all generic post outlines. In 2014 NHS Scotland made a decision to have generic post outlines with examples of application. The examples of application have been pre-defined. Line managers only need to select the outline for the band of the role and assign to their staff member.

- Do I sign off my mid year review?
No. The appraisal should be left open throughout the year (2019/20) and at the mid-year reviews please ensure you DO NOT Select ‘Confirm & Agree’. You can still make updates to your Objectives and PDP pages after having a mid year review conversation.
- Can you input more than one comment in a dimension?

Yes, Edit/Update and Delete is available on the Learning Needs and on the Objectives area within Turas Appraisal.
- Can an appraisal be rolled forward to the following year?
Appraisals should not be rolled onto the next year. Ensure that you close off your end of year review and begin a new appraisal for the following year.
